“The unexamined life is not worth living." - Socrates
Throughout the therapeutic process, you remain free to decide what you wish to explore, how deeply you want to go, and when you feel ready to end therapy. First Steps You may have been thinking about seeking support for some time, yet feel nervous about opening up to someone you do not know, or uncertain about how psychotherapy might help you. Taking the first step can feel daunting, and it is natural to have questions or reservations. One way to begin is to arrange an initial consultation and see how you feel. This gives you an opportunity to meet me, talk about what has brought you to therapy, and consider whether working together feels right for you. To have a brief conversation or arrange an initial consultation, please call me on 0781 384 4596 or email me at info.samsulyou@gmail.com. Initial Consultation The initial session is an opportunity to talk about your background, what is concerning you, and what you hope to gain from therapy. It is also a space for you to ask questions and get a sense of how I work. This first meeting allows us to begin exploring what you are looking for and whether you feel comfortable working with me. There is no obligation to continue beyond this session. If you decide to proceed, we can discuss how best to approach the therapeutic work together. Counselling Counselling is generally a shorter-term process that focuses on a specific difficulty or concern you are experiencing. It provides a safe and confidential space to express your worries, explore difficult feelings, and talk about what may be troubling you. Being genuinely heard and understood, without judgement, can in itself be a healing experience. Through counselling, you may gain greater insight into your difficulties, develop a clearer understanding of your feelings, and explore the choices available to you. Counselling often consists of around twelve sessions, although this can be extended depending on your needs and wishes. Psychotherapy Psychotherapy offers an opportunity for deeper, more sustained exploration of your thoughts, feelings, experiences, and relationships. At times, you may find yourself repeating patterns of behaviour you wish to change, experiencing difficult emotions that seem to arise without an obvious cause, or holding beliefs about yourself that feel limiting or difficult to understand. Through psychotherapy, you can begin to explore how past experiences, relationships, and unconscious beliefs, values, and assumptions may shape your present life. Developing greater awareness of these influences can help you understand yourself more deeply and open up new possibilities for change. Over time, this process may enable you to relate to yourself and others differently, make more conscious choices, and develop a greater sense of freedom in how you live your life. Transpersonal Psychotherapy Transpersonal psychotherapy explores the spiritual dimensions of human experience. Life's challenges can offer opportunities to look more deeply within ourselves, discover new perspectives, and develop a greater sense of meaning. This approach encourages you to recognise and integrate different aspects of yourself, reconnect with your inner resources, and explore your potential for growth. Listening to your inner experience and what feels deeply meaningful to you can be an important part of this journey. Through this process, you may develop a stronger connection with yourself and a greater sense of authenticity, wholeness, and fulfilment. Ending When you begin to consider ending, we can explore what is informing your decision and whether this feels like the right time for you. It is an opportunity to reflect on your therapeutic journey, acknowledge the changes and insights you have gained, and explore what the ending means to you. Endings can bring a range of feelings and may also connect with earlier experiences of separation, loss, or change. Making space for these feelings can help you bring the therapeutic work to a meaningful close. The number of sessions needed to conclude therapy will depend on the nature and duration of our work together. We can discuss the ending at a pace that feels appropriate for you, allowing time to reflect on your experience and prepare for the next stage of your journey.
